The Challenge

Only 50% of children in low-income areas are read aloud to on a daily basis
One in three children enter kindergarten lacking basic pre-literacy skills
Two-thirds of fourth graders cannot read proficiently

Why?

Two-thirds of low-income families have no age-appropriate books at home
Most low-income childcare centers and preschools lack age-appropriate books
Many parents do not understand the critical importance of reading aloud
